The History of Tequila: The Spirit of Mexico

Tequila, the iconic distilled spirit representing Mexico worldwide, has a rich and fascinating history spanning centuries. At Casa Tequilera de Arandas, we are proud to be part of this tradition, and today, we want to share more about the origins and evolution of this iconic drink.

The Origins of Tequila

The history of tequila begins with Mexico’s ancient inhabitants, long before the arrival of the Spaniards. Indigenous peoples already used the agave plant, native to the region, to produce a fermented drink known as pulque. However, it wasn’t until the arrival of the conquistadors in the 16th century that the distillation process transformed pulque into a more refined drink: mezcal. Over time, this mezcal evolved into what we now know as tequila, specifically produced from the Blue Agave Tequilana Weber.

Global Recognition of Tequila

In the 20th century, tequila crossed borders and became an internationally appreciated beverage. Its official recognition came in 1974 with the establishment of the Tequila Denomination of Origin (DOT), which protects and regulates tequila production, ensuring that only spirits made in certain regions of Mexico under strict standards can bear this name.
